Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and have become even more comfortable than ever before.
How Metal Braces Build Smiles
Traditional metal braces are still the go-to solutions for most cases of misaligned and crooked teeth. Made from high-grade stainless steel, these braces straighten teeth with arch wires and metal brackets. With metal braces, changing up your smile is also possible—just mix and match the colored elastics.
Bluffton Orthodontics recommends braces to correct a variety of problems that result from crooked or misaligned teeth, such as underbites, overbites, crossbites, gaps, overcrowding, and speech impediments.
How It Works
In most procedures, Dr. Garrison and his team at Bluffton Orthodontics will use metal brackets to attach to their patients’ teeth, holding everything together with a durable arch wire. Dr. Garrison will also place the bracket on specific areas of the tooth. Brackets use tiny rubber bands called “ligatures” to attach the arch wires.
The combination of wires and brackets exerts a gentle pressure over your teeth, forcing them to return to the proper positions.
What to Expect
As your trusted Bluffton orthodontist, Dr. Garrison and his team are dedicated to ensuring that each patient receive only the highest level of care. Each patient should expect to receive quarterly, or in some cases, monthly, adjustments. After each adjustment, it is normal to experience some aching and soreness with your teeth. In some cases, the brackets may cause slight irritation to your gums, however this is quickly remedied with the application of wax.
Of course with all braces treatment, it is advised that you do not consume certain foods (e.g. crunchy treats). This is to prevent pieces from being caught in the brackets.
