Soreness Caused from Braces and Appliances

You may find that when you first get your braces on (or after an adjustment) that your teeth and mouth feel a little sore.

While that’s totally normal, and will soon go away, we know that it can sometimes be uncomfortable. To help get rid of any soreness or pain, you can dissolve one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water. Swish and gargle this solution in your mouth for just a couple of minutes (but make sure not to swallow the saltwater!). If you find that the pain is more severe and isn’t relieved by rinsing, you can also try taking a pain reliever.

Some people also find that their lips, cheeks, and tongue may become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become used to the braces. If you are experiencing this irritation, we can provide you with wax that you can put over the braces to lessen the tenderness. If you need some wax, please let us know.
